All songs are traditional, arranged by Monica Nash.
A CD of traditional folk songs by Monica Nash. All the songs have connections with the work of D.H. Lawrence: some feature in his novels and letters, while others are related to themes in his work.

D.H. Lawrence was very fond of learning and singing folk songs. He wrote to Cecil Gray on 17th January 1918: “I am not writing anything, only sit learning songs which I find a great amusement. I can read well enough to learn a song nicely in about a quarter of an hour so I have already got off twenty or thirty. I don't know why it amuses me so much more than reading or writing.”
Lawrence was a teenager when the English Folk movement came into being at the turn of the century, spearheaded by the Reverend Sabine Baring Gould and Cecil Sharp. He was aware of that movement, and would have been familiar with many of the songs , which were being collected at the time, albeit often in bowdlerised form. Some of the songs on this disc were known to Lawrence. Others have been chosen because of their 'Lawrentian' themes.
(Quotation from "The Letters of D.H. Lawrence." Cambridge University Press.)

The CD features Monica Nash on vocals and guitar.
Here Monica recalls how the CD came about:
“I have been a member of the D.H. Lawrence Society for several years now, and joined initially out of curiosity, as an incentive to find out more. When Rosemary Howard, who organises the programme and edits the newsletter discovered that I had been a folk singer on the local scene, she suggested I give a talk about Lawrence and Folk Music. At first I wondered what on earth I would find to talk about, since I had never associated Lawrence with folk music. However as I expanded my reading, I realised that there were a number of references to folk songs throughout Lawrence's work, particularly in the early novel The White Peacock. There was a wealth of material, and so, following the talk and with encouragement from friends, this recording came into being. It includes some lesser known songs, and songs which are particular favourites of mine, which can be related to Lawrences's work, even if he did not know them personally.”
